Man under fire made all the difference in the Melbourne test

Man under fire made all the difference in the Melbourne test

Australian bowlers bowled well but then our bowlers were also not far behind. In both the inings they had Austraial top order in tatters-24 for 4. But, the man who stablised the tattered ininings on both occasions with useful century stands was no other than Ricky ponting. Had he not come out with the invaluable contributions, result could have been different.

Age hardly matters. One reeds firm resolve . Tendulkar at 38 looked far ahead of young Kohli.

Children--Why do we need to enlarge our vision

Children anywhere, everywhere, are the common heritage of mankind; nay, indeed, the way they survive will shape the future of mankind. It’s perfectly okay when you give love, affection care and best within your means to your child but while doing so we all need to keep some space in our hearts for those children also who happen to be not as fortunate as our children are. When we do so we create abetter future for our own children.

These children of lesser God are less likely to know how to cope in crises. Perhaps the reason why we are commanded to care for children is not only that they may suffer more, but that there is less they themselves can do about it.

Fudging of accounts and cutting corners

Kiran Bedi's misdemeanor tells loudly that our parameters of honesty and probity in public life have taken a big hit.

Anna and his team will do well to read Harry Truman

Measure of Truman'greatness can be gauged from what he did after he left the White House.

The only asset he had when he died was the house he lived in, which was in Missouri . His wife had inherited the house from her mother and father and other than their years in the White House, they lived their entire lives here.

He was paying for his stamps and personally licking them. As President he paid for all of his own travel expenses and food.

When his successor Eisenhower became president, Harry and his wife Bess drove home to Missouri by themselves. There was no Secret Service following them.

When offered corporate positions at large salaries, he declined, stating, "You don't want me. You want the office of the President, and that doesn't belong to me. It belongs to the American people and it's not for sale."

Even later, on May 6, 1971, when Congress was preparing to award him the Medal of Honor on his 87th birthday, he refused to accept it, writing, "I don't consider that I have done anything which should be the reason for any award, Congressional or otherwise."

Mr. Anna-- It is the means which matter

Anna Hazare will do well to remember that it is the means to achieve the goal which separate great men from the ordinary ones. there are many who who went to the extent of comparing him with Gandhi and JP forgetting that they were the people who would never resort to cheap means to achieve their ends. I am sure those who praised him sky high had not read Gandhi and a little they knew about him was from 'Lage raho Munna Bhai.'

I find nothing great in Anna Hazare except that he firmly pursued an issue which our country needed to address and displayed tenacity but that is not everything which makes a man great. He needs to disoplay pragmatism without compromising with convictions and values, patience and maturity also. Unfortunately Anna has not displayed these traits. I am afraid he may not end up being another Ram Dev with his these cheap tactics like taking sides in Hissar by-poll. Only the capacity to undertake Fast un to death does not make a man great. We had sant Feruman who undertook fast for Panjabi Suba way back in 1967and died after 84 days.

More over people like Gandhi were more happy with the change in people's thinking rather than relying upon some legislation. I am very confident Lok pal will not solve all the corruption related problems unless we also change. If by stroke of good luck, tremendous goodwill has visited Anna, he should not do the folly of squandering it.

People who find Anna as the epitome of honesty probably have very shellow knowledge of the our ancestors and even now there are many who are squeak and utterly honest.

Sardar Patel was pleading a case in the court, a peon came rushing to handover the telegram, but Sardar continued. When debate was over Sardar came to the chamber. There were tears in his eyes. When enquired Sardar told that his wife had died if he had disclosed in the court it would have taken away the precious time of the court.

I want my readers to read about Harry Trueman, President of America

When offered corporate positions at large salaries, he declined, stating, "You don't want me. You want the office of the President, and that doesn't belong to me. It belongs to the American people and
it's not for sale."

Even later, on May 6, 1971, when Congress was preparing to award him the Medal of Honor on his 87th birthday, he refused to accept it, writing, "I don't consider that I have done anything which should be the reason for any award, Congressional or otherwise."

As President he paid for all of his own travel expenses and food.

I have many anecdotes which I will share some other time.

After reading this I hope our people will stop considering Anna as the last word when it comes to honesty. I know of many people who would not have allowed Rs 2 lacs to be spent on their fecilitations what Mr Anna did.

Why can't we do away with bi-elections?

Why can't we do away with bi-elections?

If we kep in to consideration the collosus expenditure in terms of money and time both apart from the damage the bi-elections inflict on state governance- for a month Ministers are seen camping at the constituency undergoing bi elections, it will be appropriate to amend the constitution and do away with bi-elections.

The party can be given the option to nominate a person from the same constituency or the same family.

Panjab is Oligarchy by turn

panjab is an oligarchy and not a democracy in its true sense.two or three feudal families rule the state turn by turn. The people's job is to chose any one of these. Ministers enjoy their office at the pleasure of these feudal lords. When elections are round the corner one gets the impression that man on the seat of power will return, but the public, who by now is fed up,gives the chance to other lord who is there with fresh set of promises, best to be forgotten when he is on the seat of power.People have also come to know that they are the chips of the same block but to keep the balance they keep on changing from one to other. Five years of power makes any Panjabi so much intoxicated that allowing him to continue could be disastrous for the general public.

Need of a Criminal Court for Politicians

One area where our country needs to enforce reforms fast is the legal
system. Criminal court excusively to provide fast justice in the cases
involving criminal offences by our politicians is the first and
foremost requirement, if we really want to cleanse our polity from
goons. The present system allows them to roam freely for decades after
having committed henious crimes by taking benefit of the axiom " Any
perceived offender is innocent till proved guilty by the court."

Sub- Mourning the Loss of World title-Cricket

Those who are mourning India's loss of World title in cricket consequent to 3-0 thrashing in the hands of England in the ongoing series must realize that India was never a world champion in test cricket in its true sense as was the case with Australia in the period from 1990 to 2009 and West Indies from 1980 to 1990.

How any team could be called world champion if it failed to defeat Australia, South Africa and even Sri Lanka on their respective soils. Again we forget that the victories that we achieved against Australia, South Africa and Sri Lanka in 2010 to level the series were from the skin of the teeth. In all three occasions one particular batsman Laxman rose to the occasion and lifted India from the hopeless situation. These victories were never as resounding as have been the case with England. Out of their last 12 wins, six were by a margin of an inning.

We are a cricket crazy nation, driven by emotion, refuse to see beyond our nose. For us all our batsmen are world-class. Agreed Tendulkar( average 56.3) is a world-class batsman but no body is prepared to give a thought what is that special in him that puts him far ahead of Kallis( average-57.89 and Dravid, the man who gave India maximum wins. We would have lost even against West Indies if he were not there.

The beautiful picture of Pakistan's foreign minister Hina Rubbani Kher on the front page of HT reminds me of the Bollywood heroines Waheeda Rehman, Sadhna and many others of my era.

probably there is a hidden message to our Indian women folk-you have not to reveal to look beautiful.

In India we will do more service to our children in schools by educating them about cleanliness than by teaching them Geeta, Bible or Kuran.

Let religion be a personal matter, best taken care by the parents at home. The best schools can do, is to focus on natural dharma, which aims at making a person BETTER HUMAN BEING. By natural dharma i mean-truth, honesty in life, compassion, service of mankind, to be sensitive to other man's feelings and above all cleanliness not only of self but of the place and environment around.

In India we will do more service to our children in schools by educating them about cleanliness than by teaching them Geeta, Bible or Kuran.

India's refusal to accept a chellege of scoring 180 runs in 47overs in the final test against West Indies

india is at the top in ICC cricket ranking but at the testing times it has not acted like the chempion. Scoring 180 runs in 48 overs was not a very difficult task against the 7th ranking country but it decided to settle for a draw though the drawn series in the eventuality of the loss would not have effected its ranking. Australia in its hey day would have happily accepted the chellenge.

If you are a chempion you must look to be a chempion.

Murder of Neeraj Grover falls in the rarest of the rare cases

Why should the killer who hacked the body in to many pieces (even if we accept Maria’s lawyer’s version that 300 pieces is an exaggerated figure) be not awarded capital punishment? In India the provision of capital punishment exists for rarest of the rare cases and Jerome Mathew falls in this category. Agreed the Judge found Jerome guilty of culpable homicide under 304(I) of IPC, but then who is the murderer under Section 302? The Judge should have answered this before awarding lenient punishments to both to Maria and Jerome.

Indeed this judgment constitutes a prima-facie case of miscarriage of justice and calls for the pressure from general public and human rights bodies.

Simply amusing- Sonia's outburst in Varanasi

In Varanasi session of Congress, the party president Sonia Gandhi said that while Congress had improved its position substantially in the current assembly elections, BJP were completely decimated.
Well I'm no BJP fan but was amused at this assessment of the President of the party which rules the nation.

Fact is that leaving aside Assam, Congress has faced reverses. In TN it lost heavily, in Kerala, its number is less than what it was last time and what it was expecting. Coupled with it by-election results had nothing encouraging for the party. Lost all three seats in Karnatka and what should be really worrisome is that its fort in Andhra, which always has been sending maximum MP's to the congress kitty, looks like crumbling.

I don't know how a Party president can draw solace from this performance.

A wonderful piece of advice from Tamil Nadu brethren

Prefer a bachelor CM to the one who is married.
Well if bachelor is not in the contest; opt for the one with single spouse. But, never--- opt for the one with multiple spouses.

If Jayalalitha with very poor record of delivery in her previous tenures as CM has romped home victorious again, it is only this factor which has contributed to her spectacular success.

It is also a lesson for those who want to make politics as their career. Best is to remain bachelor. Well if you can’t restrain then remain childless. But, if you find it difficult to curb your desire for children then confine it to one or two, not in dozens like our Karuna. Modi's three consecutive wins despite heavy odds against him support this finding.

Clean image of the leader is valued

Bhartendu Sood, 231/45-A, Chandigarh

The out come of the polls has revealed beyond doubt that the clean image of the leader matters very much which should gladden every body. Staler performance of VS Achuthanandan in Kerala, Tarun Gogoi's hat rick in Assam and fall of Karuna regime in TN despite its good pro poor actions in last five years manifest this beyond any doubt.

The worrisome factor is emerging tendency of minorities to polarize as was visible in Kerala.

Reasoning of faith

I beg to differ with Mr. K. Veeramani when he says that in religion there is no place for questioning. In India if so many sects have taken birth and have flourished, it is mainly because of two reasons. First, the founders of these sects questioned certain beliefs, interpretations of the holy texts and the rituals which were in vogue in their respective times whether it is Sikhism or Arya Samaj. Second, in India free expression of views was never restricted unlike in many countries where resoning of holy texts constitutes blasphemy. Fact of matter is that the element of reasoning and questioning of faith prevailed in India in all periods. For example Guru Nanak Dev and Maharishi Dayanand Saraswati both questioned many such practices, rituals and beliefs in Hinduism, being practiced at those times, which created inequality in humanity and gender bias. Buddhism and Jainism surfaced only because Hinduism as interpreted by the religious heads at that time was reasoned.

Reasoning of religion will never cease. For example many states have banned slaughter of animals in the temples though it was defended by many as a part of religion. Likewise Maharashtra govt. has promulgated anti superstition law, the eradication of blind faith bill to stop black magic and human sacrifices. It is happening because of the reasoning only.

Religion will always be questioned and reasoned in an open society in the changing times but basic core of religion which aims at making a man good human being will remain intact. Bad people do bad acts and good people do good acts, but a true religion many a times has made bad people turn good not always because they started accepting God.

Confining religion to acceptance of God is too narrow a perception of Mr. K. Veeramai. What would he say about Buddhism? For example there are religions which derive their strength from the concept of Karma Bhog ie fruit of ones actions and it goes to turn believers in to better human beings.

Osama's burial in Sea

Muslim clerics say that burial in sea is anti Islamic. But, how can one follow the tenets in death for him who flouted tenets of his religion when he was alive.

Last, we should not forget that the terrorists linked in 29/11 attack were denied burial space by the Muslims in Mumbai. If terrorist could be denied the burial space how the one who was the most influencing factor when it comes to giving wings to terrorism and under whom global terrorism flourished could be given a burial space on earth. It had to be shark or some aquatic animal's belly.

Man remains man

It is really coincidence that the statement made by Gujarat Chief Minister Mr. Narender Modi in 2002, " Muslims be taught a lesson to ensure that such incidents do not recur ever again" and the one attributed to our late Prime Minister Mr. Rajiv Gandhi in 1984 just after the Sikh riots has same tone and texture. Does it not prove that man remains man whether in BJP or Congress? His sense of belongingness to the community to which he is born takes precedence over his constitutional responsibilities and human approach when put to test.

When you ignore time tested wisdom

When you ignore time tested wisdom

Our elders used to tell that if you want to scuttle any good proposal then involve a lawyer. He will ensure that proposal does not culminate. Our PM by involving an eminent lawyer Kapil Sibal first bit the dust in JPC issue and now Sibal has created all sorts of problems in the drafting of Lokpal bill and it is showing UPA and PM in very poor light.

There is a lesson for Shanti Bhushan also. Our shastras tell that accumulation of wealth is a direct invitation to problems. Shanti Bhushan may be honest but his huge wealth makes him vulnerable to all type of allegations. If you really want to be a blemish less public figure then do what our great leader Lala Lajpat Rai would do. He was also a prominent lawyer of his time. He would earn in lacs and donate entire earnings for noble causes. Mr. Shanti Bhushan, if you really want to be remembered as a man who did his bit for a good cause then make a trust with your entire wealth. It would silence the notorious men in congress.

Both Kapil Dev and M.S. Dhoni are DAV products

Both Kapil Dev and M.S. Dhoni are DAV products

It is really a great feeling for any institution to have country’s two World Cup winning captains to be its products.
I feel that the four noble souls to whom country will remain indebted for the grand work being done by DAV institution to spread literacy are-Maharishi Dayanand Saraswati who gave the slogan “Spread knowledge and vanish ignorance”. The other three are Mahatma Hansraj, Lala Lajpat Rai and Gurudat Vidyarthi who spearheaded the proposal in 1883 just after the untimely demise of Swami Dayanand to create memoriam in the shape of DAV educational institutions as a tribute to that great sage.

To create temples of learning rather than temples with some gods inside reflects the radical thinking of the great institution –Arya Samaj founded by Maharishi Dayanand Sarswati .

Teachers need to be put to test

Ref- News item-Getting teacher’s Job tougher now-page3 of 22-04-2011

It is indeed a very good development that apart from B.ED and ETT degrees teachers is Punjab will have to clear eligibility test. Test should be followed by a group discussion to test their speaking skill.
But, problem is that there are already many teachers who are not fit for the job. What I suggest that Govt. conducts a test for the existing teachers as well and those who are found below par are given training to upgrade their skills, especially the speaking skill.
Likewise the working hours of the teachers should be minimum 42 hours in a week.
It is not to say that the teaching hours should be increased but they should use this extra two hours time to preparer their lectures what they seem to be not doing.
When the Govt. jobs are for the life time, we don’t realize how much harm the incapable teachers do.
I don’t see any good reason for the Union Leaders to object to this amendment.

HONESTY BEGINS AT HOME

HONESTY BEGINS AT HOME

We assemble for a weekly Satsang on every Sunday. One of our members is a retired Tehsildar who enjoys the reputation of being utterly honest with unimpeachable integrity. I couldn’t refrain myself from asking him how he could resist taking bribe in the job in which money flows even if one didn’t demand.

Amused, he told me like this, “My widow mother struggled to teach me up to Middle Standard by cleaning utensils in the house of village Head. Fortunately, I was selected as Patwari and moved to a city. Money would come even without my asking for it. I sent Rs 40 from my first savings to my mother who got suspicious of my source of earning since Rs 40 was a big amount at that time in the back drop of Patwari’s measly salary. She sent back the entire amount to me by money order with a message that if she knew her son would become a corrupt official she’d not have struggled to give him education. I was very much pained and returned back the money to the person who had bribed me and took the pledge that I’d live with honest means.”

Honesty is the cardinal principle of dharma and all religions and seers speak of its paramount importance in making the human life pure and virtuous. If today we find massive corruption making inroads every where, it can be ascribed to our embracing such evils which are antithetical to tenets of dharma. These evils are-avarice and our failure to put restrain on our aspirations in the face of excessive consumerism. We see security of life in money alone and amass more than what we might need. Impatience-money is seen as the quickest way to avoid hassles. Attachment with kin which makes us find sense of belongingness in our family alone- comprising of wife, husband and children alone. Lacks of empathy for fellow human being – we always think of gaining something out of others rather than to think being useful to them. Our distinction between honest and dishonest means has become so much blurred that we don’t mind bartering away the virtue of honesty for petty gains.

Lokpal is OK since the role of ombudsman in any society can’t be undermined but that should not be seen as a panacea. We all need to be virtuous and teach lesson in honesty to our children since honesty begins at home.

Resolution passed by Maharashtra state assembly for Bharat Ratna

Without commenting on whether Tendulkar deserves countries highest award or not, all I'll say that Maharashtra govt. by passing a resolution in the state assembly has sent a wrong signal. It smacks of regional bias. Tomorrow all states will start pushing their own names, some deserving others may not and in coalition politics our PMs may have to accommodate unworthy candidates also.

This issue should be left to the central govt.

No point in comparing Dhoni with the captains in the past

It is pointless to compare Dhoni with Pataudi as the captain. Any captain is as good as his team. Clive Lloyd won two world cups in seventies but today if you make him lead the side with present bunch of players it will not make much difference to West Indies ranking. Most recent example is of Ricky Ponting. He won two world cups as a captain but today with a different set of players who were no patch on Haddin, Martin Gilchrest or McGrath , he could not take his side even to semi finals. Never in the past any Indian captain had such a wonderful bunch of players- Sehwag the most feared batsman in the world, Tendulkar, the best and most consistent batsman in the world, Gambhir a world class batsman, Laxman, he can walk in to any side in the world solid and reliable like Kallis then Doni himself a world class player. Not to forget Zahir the most effective fast bowler in the game and Yuvraj the most useful all-rounder in ODI.and last our Harbhajan, even while on decline he continues to be a threat.

In the last fifty years standard, popularity& general interest in cricket has gone up considerably in India and it was bound to get rewarded. Likewise there has been decline in England and West Indies which the results reflect abundantly

Lure of Money has robbed us of our sense of dignity

Persons coming with charity to our country are given red carpet welcome without giving a thought whether we really need it and even if we need why should be accept from the others when we have equally wealthy people adoring Forbe's list of the richest in the world. We don't mind the aid coming from British who themselves are deep in recession. Japan even in dire strait refused to accept donations while we gleefully accept even in the best of the times and will look forward to more. Money has robbed us of our sense of dignity and pride what one saw in plenty in our Japanese brethren.

MY ONLY ASSET IS MY INTEGRITY-Justice Kapadia

In this age of eroding values this one liner is really heart warming and elevates the soul especially after you come to know that this comes from the man who is the Chief Justice of India.

Justice kapadia came from a poor family and started his career as a class IV employee. The one description that always tagged him is-he is utterly honest and is a man of impeccable integrity.

What separates him from others who are impeached in the allegations of corruption – he looked for self actualization in the career he had chosen. He took the remuneration that went with the career, without trying to compete with successful businessmen and industrialists.

We need to salute such persons and tell about them to our children also so that they their faith in honesty remains unshaken.

All of us as Nations are gifted with different tempraments-ongoing World Cup

Some raise their performance level at the time of big events-like Newzeland and Aussie.
others perform very well and look promising when an ordinary event is in progress but there is an astounding fall in their performance in the big event like ICC title-I hope you should be able to guess it.
Then there are other nations like Pakistan who are so divided that their own players can't digest for a long that their team is doing well. They will do some thing or the other downright silly to put their captain and in the process their country down.

This is exactly where PM has failed

Former Supreme Court Judge Mr. Krishna lyre’s campaign for the removal of KG BalaKrishnan’s from the post of Chairperson of national Human rights Commission needs to be taken forward by all. Your editorial is well timed. Hon'ble Justice Mr. Iyer is absolutely on point when he says "Suspician is a upas tree under whose shade reason fails and justice dies" His being under the cloud of suspicion itself constitutes enough ground for his removal. By now our PM should have acted but unfortunately he has not done in keeping with his style of working-i.e. to act when the issue is already hijacked by the opposition for their personal gains.

Publicizing big fat marriages

When media publicizes big fat marriages it severely damages the cause of woman foetus.

No other factor is as much responsible for skewing gender ratio as the Indian marriages in which girl’s father even after having a highly accomplished daughter is at the receiving end.

All linked with media need to ponder over and pass a resolution to not give publicity to such marriages where money is squandered, even if it means loss of advertisement revenue.

Mr. Manmohan Singh, our PM, may be having thousand and one qualities which make him a better human being than the present crop of politicians. They should not have chosen army and judiciary as their career

Two news stories in today's paper Lt. General gets three years RI in ration scam and SC seeks status report ob complaint against former Chief Justice of India amply throw light on the state of affairs in our country.

Other day we red two generals from the Army and a few Admirals are involved in Ararsh Housing Society scam. I am distraught like any other right minded person. Has the infection of corruption already rampant among politicians, bureaucrats and businessmen now insidiously spread itself among the judiciary and the armed forces?

Everywhere we turn today there are signs of ethical deterioration. In business, bright young people have made immoral millions by using insider-trading information. In government, hardly a day goes by without some public official being involved in an ethical dilemma. In education, there are cheating scandals among students, teachers and those who run these institutions.. Obviously, all these people, many of them supposedly outstanding citizens, believed that they had to cheat to win. They, along with many others, believe that nice guys finish last.

Both the judges and the generals forgot that Purpose is the Objective or Intention, something towards which you are always striving. It is not the same as a ‘goal’. A goal is tangible. It is something definite that you can accomplish. A purpose is ongoing. It gives meaning and definition to our lives. A goal can be to make money, but for a general or a judge, would they feel comfortable with that as the purpose in life? If yes, then they should have chosen to be tradesmen or businessmen in the first place. However, even for tradesmen, money would perhaps not be the purpose of life, although money may be a major goal. But for the judiciary, armed services, academia, researchers or many other professions like journalism, money can never be a major goal.

We have fortunately many silver linings around these few dark clouds. I think of the former Chairman of EXIM Bank of India, who after retirement moved from his company Napean Sea Apartment to a two bedroom apartment at Goregaon. He lived there content and peaceful. Another Managing Director of SBI retired and moved from Malabar Hill to Andheri and was not ashamed at the move. There is the Lt. General who retired as GOC in C and went back to a modest home in Santacruz, a suburb of Mumbai, from a sprawling bungalow in an army cantonment. All these and many more had a “purpose”. They looked for self actualisation in what they had chosen to do as a career. They took the remuneration that went with the career, without trying to compete with successful businessmen and industrialists. They had done a good job; enjoyed doing it; and moved off centre stage with pride, dignity and a sense of self worth!

In an age of eroding values, we need to salute them. These values will endure even when those who despise them have died.

LOVE

There are three types of Love

Satvik-here the lover does not expect anything in return

Rajsik-Love combined with feverishness and a desire to get something back

Tamsik- here love is with selfish motive-result is devastation

But, there is another ‘love’ which is superior to these three forms of love and that is ‘Divine’ love

While all wordly loves are like the ocean which has a bottom at some point, Divine love is like the sky which is limitless.

All worldly loves diminish with time but not the ‘Divine love’. A child loves its mother and as the child gets older, the love for the mother recedes because its new focus becomes friends, spouse and children. But, on the contrary Divine love grows with time and never recedes.

One should always remember that the ability to receive love comes with the ability to give love.

The one who is always expecting others to love him without becoming the donor remains thirsty and frustrated.

Our polity touching new low

ISSUE OF CENTRAL VIGILANCE COMMISSIONER (CVC) APPOINTMENT BEFORE THE APEX COURT

There are three members in the panel to select a candidate for CVC post. When Govt. says that panel was not aware of the pending charge sheet afainst PJ Tomas, the man who was selected, it is tantamount saying that PM and Home Minister were not in the know of it. But the third member, the leader of opposition Sushma Swaraj says that she had raised the issue at that point itself, which is a fact also if we go by the past reports.

PM should explain. Common man is beleagured.

Indeed our polity has touched new low.
